Yard waste fundraiser benefits invaluable Nanaimo non-profit

NANAIMO — A longstanding Nanaimo business is hosting a residential yard and wood waste recycling event by donation to help an important cause and assist in spring cleaning chores.

Milner Group’s event at its Biggs Pit Rd. location takes place on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. with all proceeds going to Nanaimo Child Development Centre (NCDC).

Milner Group human resources and marketing manager Sherry Jordan said they look forward to helping people clear out their yards with favourable weather upon us.

“We’ve been here over 55 years: started with one truck, one guy, one pit and we’re here now because of the community. To give back to the community and raise some money for a good cause is a natural fit.”

Jordan said barbecued hot dogs will also be available with all of those proceeds also going to NCDC.

“It’s a win-win for everybody. You get your garden cleaned up and nobody’s complaining at home and get those chores done and you can also give back to the kids and the community,” Jordan said.

She stated Milner Group has other fundraisers this year in the planning stages to support other valued non-profit organizations in Nanaimo.

Michelle Kocourek, NCDC resource development coordinator, told NanaimoNewsNOW the Milner Group event will bolster several of their Family Programming Support initiatives, including for literacy and assessment services, as well as to purchase therapeutic equipment.

While a strong turnout for Saturday’s event is anticipated, it’s expected to be a tamer affair compared to a wildly popular free soil giveaway held by Milner Group early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

An estimated 3,000 vehicles showed up at Milner Group’s Biggs Pit Rd. site for the April 11, 2020 event to claim two yards of free soil.

In some cases, motorists waited several hours in long lineups to enter the site, while soil was also delivered to about 250 frontline health workers who could not attend.
