NANAIMO — A significant jail tenure has been issued to a man who pleaded guilty to a long list of drug charges.

Shai Ben Eli Illan, 30, was recently sentenced in BC Supreme Court in Nanaimo to 9.5 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to seven drug trafficking charges and a pair of drug possession offences.

Justice Carla Forth’s sentence against Illan is in connection to offences in Nanaimo in April 2022.

Four of the counts involved fentanyl, while other counts included crystal meth, benzodiazepine, MDMA and ketamine.

Illan was credited for time spent in custody prior to sentencing, leaving a further nine years and four months behind bars to be served.

Federal jail sentences of over two years for fentanyl trafficking have been commonplace in Nanaimo in recent years amid the ongoing toxic drug crisis.
