Tsunami Week in Alberni

Tsunami Week in Alberni

Apr 16, 2024 | 7:51 AM

It’s Tsunami Awareness Week, and few other Canadian cities have more cause to recognize the danger of tsunamis than Port Alberni.
Regional District Protective Services Manager Karen Freethy says this year’s focus is on educating people on the areas of the city considered possible inundation zones.
“It’s not just whether you live in the innovation zone because we all move around our community, so you could be out for lunch or at work or think about where your parents live or think about where your children go to school and and just know whether you’re in the zone or out of the zone I think it’s a really important piece,” she said.
Freethy says maps of the innundation zones are on the ACRD website along with Tsunami escape routes.
The regional district will be holding a “know your zone” contest this week along with “hike to high ground” walks.
