Clippers give up late goals in 3-1 loss at Surrey

SURREY — The Clippers and Eagles put on a defensive duel at the South Surrey Arena.

Surrey won the contest 3-1 but the game was tied 1-1 for most of the night.

Remi Gelinas opened the scoring for Nanaimo three minutes into the game but Eagles goalie Jaiden Sharma shut the door the rest of the game.

League leading scorer Caden Cranston quickly tied the game but the Clippers Tyler Hodges then stopped every Surrey chance for well over 40 minutes.

With 11 minutes left in the game the Eagles Zachary Wagnon sniped the game winner, and Aaron Schwartz added an insurance goal with four minutes left.

The Clippers put on a strong third period push and outshot Surrey 14-7 in the final 20 minutes but couldn’t get a second goal.

Overall Nanaimo outshot the Eagles 29-24 and both teams finished 0/2 on the power play.

The Clippers finished 1-2 on their mainland road trip and have a busy weekend upcoming.

Surrey will visit Nanaimo March 8 and 10 with the Clippers traveling to Victoria to play the Grizzlies on March 9.

At the conclusion of play on March 2 Nanaimo was in fourth place in the Coastal Division with 53 points.

The third place Bulldogs have 55 points and the fifth place Grizzlies have 51.
