Nanaimo RCMP consider death of 33-year-old woman a homicide

NANAIMO — Local mounties are searching for a grey sedan connected to what they say is a homicide investigation.

Nanaimo RCMP were called to an apartment building in the Country Club Centre area in the early evening hours of Jan. 10, to check on the well-being of a 33-year-old woman who had not been seen in several days.

“When we arrived at the scene, there were several witnesses already inside of her unit,” Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “These people encountered an unidentified man and a deceased woman.”

Officers were told the man fled, despite efforts by others to keep him in the apartment.

The RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit quickly assumed control of the investigation into the woman’s death.

Six days later on Tuesday, Jan. 16, the investigation was officially deemed a homicide by Nanaimo RCMP.

O’Brien said the man who left apartment unit has made contact with officers, but wouldn’t say how or if he’s connected to the woman or her death.

“The unidentified man has since been identified and has spoken with police, but one outstanding issue that we’re looking at is a vehicle that was reported stolen and it’s related to the investigation.”

A 2007 grey Nissan Sentra, with B.C. plates SP2 72P is linked to the investigation, with O’Brien not at liberty to disclose further information at this point.

O’Brien assured people though, investigators believe there is no further risk to the public.

Anyone with information on the vehicle is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754 -2345, quoting file number 2024-1071.
