Survey participants want a wave pool

Alberni Valley residents could be voting on a $67 million wave pool in an upcoming referendum.

After an online survey this past fall, it was determined that Alberni Valley residents want a pool with six 25-metre lanes, similar to the current pool, with the addition of a wave pool, along with a slide, hottub, sauna, steam room, fitness space and multipurpose room.

Some members of the Aquatic Centre Advisory Committee wanted to back away from the more expensive wave pool idea, but were reminded that 44% of the more than 1000 survey respondents chose the wave pool option.

Overall, 77% of respondents said they support the new aquatic centre, which is a “high level of support” according to lead consultant John Buttery from HCMA.

Beaufort area director Fred Boyko indicated disappointment in the survey response level.

“One thing everyone needs to remember is this is based on 1000 people out of 26,000; that’s 4% of the population doing this,” he said. “Before we do a final vote on it we have to remember this needs to go to a referendum so everybody can actually have a proper vote on this. I think 4% is not a lot.”

The recommendation now moves to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District Board for further discussion.
