‘Have some fun with it:’ Nanaimo comic store hosting Vader Santa for cosplay Christmas event

Dec 9, 2023 | 6:04 AM

NANAIMO — A local comic book store is hosting a big Christmas cosplay event on Saturday, with the dark side of the force taking over the holiday spirit.

Curious Comics in Nanaimo is hosting ‘A Cosplay Christmas’ on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Country Club Centre (3200 Island Hwy), where Vader Santa is expected to be a big draw.

Mike Drummond, president of Curious Comicon non-profit society, said anyone is welcome to come to the free event, and he’s excited about the response they’ve heard so far to the event.

“We want to have something that’s a little bit more unique than just your standard Christmas fair. It’s gotten lots and lots of traction online. We had almost 300 people interested which is crazy. We don’t get that for the show in May and we have 5,000 people that come to that show.”

All proceeds raised from donations will once again support the Nanaimo Child Development Centre, the charity of choice during their annual spring Curious ComicCon.

Drummond said they’ve managed to raise over $30,000 for local charities since they started putting on free events like this thanks to generous donations.

“It’s just another really cool event, it’s something a bit more unique. Regular Santa will be here too, and he’s looking forward to having some cool photos with Vader Santa too.”

Local vendors will also be on-site for any last-minute holiday shopping.

Also in attendance for photo ops will be cosplay Elsa from the Disney movie Frozen, Poinsettia Poison Ivy, Christmas Witch, and the seven-foot-tall Batman of Victoria to keep any villains in check.

“We encourage everybody to dress if you want to come, have some fun with it. We want people to just have fun with it, come in costume,” said Drummond. “It’s another reason to dress up, and we can’t have enough reasons for that… it doesn’t have to be Star Wars-based or anything based, just come have some fun with it.”
