PORT ALBERNI — The Clippers beat their early season nemesis the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 5-2 at Weyerhauser Arena.

The Bulldogs had won all four previous games this season including a 6-5 overtime decision on Nov. 1.

In a tight first period Nanaimo outshot the Bulldogs 8-7 but the game remained scoreless thanks to the goaltending of Callum Tung and the Clippers Tyler Hodges.

A pair of defencemen traded goals in the middle frame.

Andrew Brown’s onetimer opened the scoring for the Clippers and Matias Myllykoski evened the score on an Alberni Valley power play.

Nanaimo also killed off a 28 second five on three in the period.

Eight minutes into the third period Willyam Gendron stole a puck and broke in alone to give Nanaimo a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs tied the contest during a full two minute five on three on a blast by Nicholas Beneteau.

The Clippers made another push with Cole Lonsdale getting the game winner with a shot off the left wing with three and a half minutes to play.

Once gain Nanaimo was penalized in the late stages but Mike Murtagh and Joel Plante both had empty net goals to cement the victory.

The Clippers had the game’s first two power plays but gave up the next seven straight, including the two five on threes.

Both of Alberni Valley’s goals were on the man advantage.

Nanaimo was outshot 34-26 and Hodges made several key stops along the way.

The Clippers beat the two teams directly above them in the standings on the Nov. 10-11 weekend by identical scores of 5-2.

After wins over the Bulldogs and Grizzlies, Nanaimo is now 8-7-2 on the season with their longest road trip of the season looming.

The Clippers will visit the Trail Smoke Eaters on Nov. 17 and the Cranbrook Bucks on Nov. 18.
