Nanaimo RCMP trying to identify pickup truck driver after highway crash with motorcycle

Sep 25, 2023 | 10:33 AM

NANAIMO — Local Mounties are appealing to the public for more information, along with any dash cam video, from a serious motorcycle incident.

A man was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries after a collision between a motorcycle and a white truck just south of Nanaimo on the Trans Canada Hwy. north of the off-ramp to the Duke Point Hwy. Thursday, Sept. 14 at around 1 p.m.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said on-scene evidence showed the driver of a white pickup changed to the fast lane without using a turn signal, forcing the motorcyclist to crash and sustain life-threatening injuries.

“The pickup continued northbound and didn’t stop. We don’t know if the white pickup saw the motorcycle, but we need to speak to that individual to find out what happened,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He noted the motorcyclist, a 72-year-old Nanaimo man, veered to the left to avoid the collision, then lost control and crashed into the centre median ditch.

Paramedics treated the rider at the scene and was then taken to Nanaimo hospital, and has since been transported to hospital in Victoria for more advanced treatment, O’Brien said.

Police are looking for more information on the driver of the truck.

“It is possible that the driver of the pickup did not see the motorcycle that was travelling beside them. Having said that, we need to speak with the driver and obtain their version of events,” O’Brien added.

Anyone travelling through the city’s north end between 12:45 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. on Sept. 14 is asked to review their footage and pass on any relevant information to the Nanaimo detachment.

Those with information can contact 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2023-32287.
