Final full-day closure on Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake planned before weekend re-opening

NANAIMO — While Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake Bluffs is expected to fully re-open before the Labour Day long weekend, at least one more full-day closure is needed in order to complete rock scaling work.

The section of road at Angel Rock will once again be closed on Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. to complete the removal of rocks before both lanes can be reopened.

Travellers needing to make connections between the Island’s east coast and Port Alberni, Tofino or Ucluelet on Tuesday can still take the Lake Cowichan detour, which adds roughly four hours of travel time.

Following this latest closure closure, the highway will continue to be closed for two periods daily, from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., and from 1:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. until the work is complete.

Two full-day closures of the highway were put in place last week in order to remove approximately a dozen large, refrigerator-sized boulders from the side of the highway.

So far, crews have removed around 200 dangerous trees and 1,000 tonnes of rock-scaling debris from the area.

Additional work includes installing at least 1.4 kilometres worth of barrier and catchment fencing, pavement patching, line marking, and sign installation.

A wildfire in the bluffs above the highway in early June sent rock and other debris onto the highway, closing it through early June.

It re-opened mid-month to single-lane alternating traffic.

A standard schedule of daytime closures for two and a half hours in the morning, and three and a half hours in the afternoon has been in place for several weeks to allow windows for crews to work.

More information on the closure, as well as the detour is available on the DriveBC website.
