NANAIMO — No injuries were reported following an afternoon fire at a business on Stewart Ave. along Nanaimo’s waterfront.

On May 26 just before 3 p.m. emergency crews were called to a structure fire at Anchorage Marina Village, with fire and smoke shooting out of the building.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant fire chief Stu Kenning said nobody was injured, but there were employees on scene when the fire broke out.

“The employees were working when it happened, they did hear the fire and they did come over and try to put it out with extinguishers, they were unsuccessful and they called 911 and we responded.”

Witnesses reported hearing a few loud bangs as the force of the fire burst through the front window, sending glass shards onto the sidewalk and street.

Workers were also seen pulling equipment and boats out of the back of the aging wooden building.

Kenning said it’s not immediately clear what started the fire.

“It’s under investigation, but we’re going to work with the tenant where they had the fire.”

Traffic in the area was temporarily closed and diverted around Stewart Ave. between Larch and Maple St.
