Nanaimo water park taps to turn on early

NANAIMO — This spring heatwave prompted City park’s staff to open three of its four water parks early.

As of Saturday, May 13, the taps will be turned on at Departure Bay Kiwanis Park, Harewood Centennial Park and Mansfield Park.

The water streams out daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., while the misting station at Maffeo Sutton Park will also be up and running, according to a City news release.

Summer season preparations are still underway at the City’s fourth water spot at Deverill Square Park, which is scheduled to open in time for May long weekend.

Nanaimo’s beaches and lakes will likely be busier than usual this weekend. A reminder that the primary parking lot at Westwood Lake is closed due to construction of the expanded and reconfigured parking lot off the end of Westwood Rd.

Meanwhile, the City of Parksville’s popular water park at its Community Park is closed indefinitely.

The City of Parksville’s manager of communications Deb Tardiff stated the water park closure is due to ongoing construction work on their waterfront, including the new gathering plaza initiative.

“The splash park receives it’s power through the project area and although the contractor and City are exploring options to provide power to the splash park, until further notice, the splash park is closed,” Tardiff told NanaimoNewsNOW.
