NANAIMO — Two Nanaimo Hornets rugby teams made the provincial semifinals, with the women’s Division 2 team playing for a championship.

On April 22, the Hornets women’s side won their game 29-0 against Simon Fraser RC.

Hornets president Nick Scott said the women have exceeded their own expectations.

“At the beginning, it was about hopefully fielding a team of twelve and since then it’s ballooned into a team of 20-plus women and they’re playing some amazing rugby. It’s not just small victories, it’s large victories and many of them by shutout.”

The women’s division two final game will take place on Saturday, April 29 at South Surrey Athletic Park against United RFC out of the lower mainland, starting at 11 a.m.

The Hornets men’s Division 1 team had a tougher time in their semifinal falling 32-15 to the Port Alberni Black Sheep.

As a whole Scott felt the 2022-23 campaign was strong for all levels of the Hornets program.

“To be honest it’s probably one of the most successful seasons I can remember being with the club,” Scott said. “We had all three of our senior clubs make the playoffs. That’s our Division 1 and 3 men and our Division 2 women. For any club, I feel like that’s a pat on the back. It’s brought everyone together and it’s really enjoyable to watch.”

The senior season will conclude with the annual awards banquet at the clubhouse at May Bennett Pioneer Park on May 6.

Meanwhile, the Hornets mini youth season is just getting started.

Scott said the club is seeing strong interest this spring.

“We had 130 kids between the ages of 4-13 show up for our mini program. As a spinoff, we’re also in four local elementary schools. We have some ability to create some crossover there so we can attract some more kids as they get a little bit older.”
