BC Ferries gearing up for busy Easter long weekend by adding extra sailings

NANAIMO — In anticipation of a very busy Easter long weekend, BC Ferries has added a number of extra sailings on their busiest routes.

Ferries’ spokesperson Deborah Marshall said to meet the higher demand, additional crossings were added to their three busiest routes between April 6 and 11.

“That would be Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, as well as Horseshoe Bay over to the Sunshine Coast. We’re also working very hard with mitigation plans in place to ensure we are able to deliver all of the sailings and guard against any last-minute service interruptions.”

It equals 128 extra sailing between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay, 42 extra sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay, and 16 extra sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale.

Marshall said they are expecting large numbers of passengers for the first official long weekend of the spring season.

“We do expect to see about 400,000 passengers and about 160,000 vehicles travel our system up and down the coast from April 6 through the 11th, so we’re getting prepared for a very busy weekend.”

She suggests booking your sailings ahead of time, arriving at least 45 minutes to an hour prior to your departure, and making sure to check their website or their Twitter account for all up-to-date information.

BC Ferries is currently in the middle of a hiring spree, looking to fill some 500 positions for the busy summer season.

“We are still seeing shortages in some critical key positions, notably license officers in the deck and engineering department. We have hired over 100 of those types of positions…we’ve also hired across other positions… to help us with the peak summer season.”

Marshall said they are also still in the process of finding someone to design charging stations for their docks, after first announcing their intentions to go electric last year.

“We are looking for some technical expertise in designing some electrification at our terminals. So that work hasn’t been completed yet, we’re looking for some engineering firms to do some designs for us. We’re a ways off yet before we electrify.”
