NANAIMO — Students at Vancouver Island University now have access to some additional supports.

Rotary Clubs of Nanaimo, Nanaimo Daybreak, Nanaimo North, Nanaimo Oceanside and Lantzville have placed $32,000 into a new endowment fund, which also saw the VIU Foundation contribute $16,000.

Bursaries of between $1,000 and $2,000 will be made available to students “who have demonstrated academic achievement as well as service to their community”, according to a statement from the clubs.

“We are delighted to build on our commitment to education in our community through the new Rotary Clubs of Nanaimo and Lantzville Endowment Fund. Together [with VIU], we are helping students achieve their educational goals through this award,” Keith McFarlane, president, Rotary Club of Nanaimo, said.

The first award from the fund will be handed out for the fall 2023 semester.

Eligible students must be studying at the Nanaimo VIU campus in any post-secondary program, and be in at least their second year of classes.

Those administering the funds will be looking for volunteer commitment to community groups as part of a student’s application.

“This scholarship will inspire students to build strong connections with our community and open their minds to fresh perspectives as they are exposed to community volunteerism.” Richard Horbachewski, executive director of the VIU Foundation, said.

It’s hoped as the fund develops and more contributions are made, more awards will be made available through the school year.
