NANOOSE BAY — A boat at the Fairwinds dock is a total loss following a fire.

Flames broke out at the Schooner Cove facility along Dolphin Dr. in Nanoose Bay after 10 a.m. on Monday, March 20 while the owner was at the gas dock.

Both the owner and refuelling attendant attempted to put the flames out by using a pair of nearby fire extinguishers but were unable to save the boat.

Nanoose Volunteer Fire Department Chief Doug Penny told NanaimoNewsNOW the 24-foot boat was fully engulfed upon arrival with the top canopy completely gone.

He added 13 members from the department attended the fire and eventually doused it from shore.

Four personnel from the nearby Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges also worked with local crews to control the situation.

Once the fire was out, work commenced in removing the boat from the water and containing any spill in the marina.

Reports from the scene suggested the fueling attendant suffered minor injuries.

Penny said the situation is now in the hands of insurance companies.

NanaimoNewsNOW has reached out to Fairwinds for comment on damage to their facility.
