Skating, swimming, and bouncy castles: Details on Family Day activities across the mid-Island

NANAIMO — Gather your family together and take advantage of some of the fun Family Day activities the mid-Island has to offer.

In Nanaimo, the City is sponsoring free family-friendly events on Monday, Feb. 20 at various event centres around the community.

The Oliver Woods Community Centre is hosting a FAM JAM from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with bouncy castles, arts and crafts, and an obstacle course. There are also public drop-in events with regular admission fees at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre from noon until 5 p.m., and family skating opportunities at the Frank Crane Arena.

Residents in Parksville/Qualicum Beach can visit the Qualicum Beach Museum from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. for a day of special family activities including a scavenger hunt with prizes. Admission is by donation.

Both Ravensong Aquatic Centre and Oceanside Place Arena will also be open from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. for free swimming and skating, including skate rentals.

In Ladysmith, the Frank Jameson Community Centre will be hosting family-orientated activities and games at their pool and gymnasium.

The pool is open for a family swim from noon until 1:15 p.m., then again from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m., while the gym activities run from noon until 2:00 p.m.

Finally, the Coombs Fairgrounds are hosting their 11th annual Family Day celebration between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Free snacks and activities are on offer.

Around the province, the provincial government is providing grants to museums and other community-based organizations to provide free access on Family Day.

Both the Royal BC Museum and the Chinese Canadian Museum will both be free of charge on Feb. 20. The Nanaimo Museum is closed Monday.
