Shorthanded goal turns tables in Clippers 5-2 loss to Bucks

ABBOTSFORD — The Clippers built up a 2-1 lead against the Cranbrook Bucks but couldn’t hold it at the BCHL showcase in Abbotsford.

The two teams traded goals in the opening period during a matinee tilt on Tuesday, Oct. 15, with Patrick Murphy connecting on a power play and the Clippers’ Cole Lonsdale equalizing off a rush down the right wing.

On a second period five-on-three advantage Andrew Brown put Nanaimo in front with a blast from the point.

But later on that same power play Shane Baker stripped the puck and went in alone to score on Clips’ netminder Kyan Labbé.

The goal sparked Cranbrook, who added two more goals in the middle frame: a deflection by Rasmus Svartstrom, and a point shot goal off the stick of Bryce Sookro.

Kaslo Ferner added another goal on a five-on-three advantage in the third period to seal the win for Cranbrook.

The final shots were 34-23 in favour of Cranbrook, while Bucks’ league best power play finished 2/4 and the Clippers went 1/6.

Nanaimo now falls to 3-4-1 on the season.

The Clippers are back in action at the BCHL Showcase on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. versus Salmon Arm at Chilliwack Coliseum.

The Clippers return home to face the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Friday, Oct. 18 with a 7:00 puck drop at Frank Crane Arena.
