Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District & teachers look to salvage two week spring break
NANAIMO — The possibility of a one week spring break returning for local students remains a very real possibility, but one which is still up for negotiation.
During a meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 1, School District 68’s education and business committee unanimously voted to postpone any decision on a proposed three year school calendar, beginning September 2023, which would see spring break revert to a one week period in March.
Trustee Charlene McKay said negotiations between the District and the Nanaimo District Teachers Association (NDTA), who must agree on any changes to the default arrangement, are still ongoing.
“I believe the postponement provides the District, Board, staff working on our behalf to be able to continue to work with our partner group, the Nanaimo (District) Teacher’s Association,” McKay said. “I just think this is a really good opportunity to come together and see what we can work out.”
