NANAIMO — First responders located the body of a missing senior following extensive search efforts.

Nanaimo RCMP combined forces with Nanaimo Search and Rescue to locate a body in the Stephenson Point area on Tuesday, Dec. 13 just before 3 p.m.

It was later determined, following recovery of the body, it was 82-year-old Elizabeth Gilchrist, who was reported missing earlier in the day.

“(Out) of respect for the family, no further details will be shared,” an RCMP spokesperson said when confirming the discovery.

It’s believed Gilchrist left her home sometime Monday night, and was reported missing by her daughter on Tuesday morning around 11 a.m.

She arrived at her mother’s house to find the door open and nobody inside the home.

Rescuers had a great deal of concern for Gilchrist’s safety and well-being throughout the search.

She suffered from some significant medical challenges, and an overnight low of -3 degrees was recorded at Nanaimo Airport early Tuesday morning.

In addition to ground and water resources, an RCMP helicopter was also used to search the Stephenson Point area.
