Dover Bay Secondary closed Monday & Tuesday after transformer failure

NANAIMO — Students at one of the region’s largest schools will have an extended weekend.

An on-site electrical transformer, owned by School District 68, failed around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 after students had left for the weekend.

An email from the District said the school is without power and they will keep students away Monday, Dec. 12 and Tuesday, Dec. 13 to work on a fix.

“Facilities are onsite and working to resolve the power issue. While we don’t know how long the outage will last, we should have a better idea on Monday afternoon and will be communicating an update at that time.”

Staff at the school will be meeting on Monday morning to discuss what, if any, additional learning supports will be in place during the outage.

The sourcing of parts and extent of the work will determine the next steps.

One Dover Secondary staff member who spoke to NanaimoNewsNOW said they were wrapping up some work after hours on Friday.

“I heard what sounded like an explosion outside, then all the lights were flickering and I thought maybe there was a ghost of something. I went and checked the rest of the school and it was happening in the whole building.”
