NANAIMO — The region’s first substantial winter storm is slowing, or outright cancelling travel in the region.

BC Ferries cancelled their afternoon and evening sailings between Nanaimo’s Duke Point and Tsawwassen in the Lower Mainland for Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Departures from Nanaimo at 3:15 p.m., 5:45 p.m., 8:15 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. are cancelled, along with corresponding trips from Tsawwassen at the same time.

Environment Canada has a gale warning issued for the Strait of Georgia south of Nanaimo. It warns of winds between 45 and 64 kilometres per hour Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Afternoon and evening trips between Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay are also cancelled, removing three crossings from the schedule.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us. We apologize for any inconvenience as a result of this [or these] cancellation[s],” a service notice from BC Ferries read.

Snow and slick road conditions are believed to be major contributing factors behind a large number of motor vehicle incidents in Nanaimo and Oceanside Tuesday, with several crashes reported along the Nanaimo Parkway and Island Hwy. in particular.

Travellers are advised to leave extra room in front of them when driving, or avoid travel completely if not essential.
