NANAIMO — Thousands of athletes will be in the Harbour City in 2025 for an event showcasing top senior athletes in the province.

Nanaimo’s winning bid for the 55+ BC Games compiled by the City and Tourism Nanaimo was announced by the BC Seniors Games Society (BCSGS) on Monday, Nov 7.

A City of Nanaimo news release stated the event will take place from Sept. 9 to Sept. 13 with 3,500 athletes expected to compete.

“…and will include opening and closing ceremonies, a social dance and up to 30 different sport competitions throughout the city. Athletes from across B.C. will compete in activities ranging from swimming to slo-pitch, which showcase many of the outstanding sporting facilities Nanaimo is known for.”

An economic benefit of $6.5 million for host cities of the annual 55+ BC Games is anticipated.

Nanaimo last hosted the 55+ BC Games in 2007.

The BCSGS noted its organization and the provincial government provide the majority of the funding required to host the annual event, which was staged last month in Victoria.

Abbotsford hosts the 55+ BC games next September.

Nanaimo unsuccessfully attempted to host the 2024 Canadian Track & Field Championship, which was awarded to Montreal.
