LANTZVILLE — Live fire fighting activities, rope pulls and the department’s full fleet of vehicles were all part of a long overdue open house.

Members from Lantzville Fire Rescue invited the public for an event on Sunday, Oct. 16 at their Superior Rd. station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chief Neil Rukus told NanaimoNewsNOW in addition to being a lot of fun, events like this are a great way to connect with the people they serve.

“It’s a great way to have the community come into our firehall, see what we do and meet some of our firefighters and understand a little better about what happens in the four walls of a fire station.”

Compressed-water training extinguishers were available for people to try and knock down a small propane fire, while a full sized fire hose was a popular attraction for kids to spray a wooden structure.

Rukus said they’ve pulled out all the stops.

“We have all our trucks out, you can tour through them. The station’s open and people can take a walk through and see what it looks like on the inside.”

Lantzville Fire Rescue responds to around 175 calls per year, mostly motor vehicle incidents and burning complaints.

Rukus said a big part of their job is education.

“We do a lot of burning enforcement so we spend a lot of time educating people in the community.”
