NANAIMO — A new golf tournament, organized on short notice has scored big for two non-profit groups.

The first Big Wheel Charity Golf Classic was held at Cottonwood Golf Course, near Nanaimo Airport, on Tuesday, Sept. 13, raising money for KidSport Nanaimo and Nanaimo Community Hospice.

Event host Aaron Pritchett said they raised $73,500 from the upstart midweek event, which was originally set for a 2023 launch before an opportunity came up this year.

“It’s important to give back to the community and give back to any society of charity that needs it. It’s not about getting any sort of accolades…it’s about actually making a difference.”

The money will be split between the two organizations.

Inclusive of the total were two sizeable donations, a $10,000 gift from the PUR KIDS Foundation to Hospice, while Lot2 Media gave the local branch of KidSport $5,500.

Pritchett said there are many people who must deal with hospice care for themselves or their loved ones, while KidSport was an organization close to his heart.

“I grew up as a kid not being able to afford to play hockey, so I had to go out there and get work and make sure I could pay for my hockey and I don’t believe kids should have to do that until they’re adults.”

Thirteen teams were on course for the event, which is expected to grow next year.

Both Pritchett and event organizer Sarah Bramley said they’ve had inquiries already from participants this year, as well as new contacts from the Lower Mainland who are keen to be involved.

In addition to a round of golf, the event featured a dinner and live entertainment.
