NANAIMO — Hornets rugby is once again on the field at May Bennett Pioneer Park.

Men’s and women’s training sessions are happening twice a week with the regular season set to begin for the division one and three men’s teams and the division two women’s side on Sept. 10.

Nanaimo Hornets president Nick Scott said all the teams have the pieces to be extremely competitive this year.

“We all should have a pretty good go at it because our men’s teams have a good core group of players from last year and with the women it’s the same thing. Now it’s just a matter of building around that. I’m extremely excited about the season.”

Even though training has already begun the Hornets are always looking for new players.

A recent appearance at a Vancouver Island University orientation event helped to spread the word about rugby in Nanaimo.

“At ‘VIU Rocks’ we had a stand to promote the game of rugby and to let the students know we are here and we are local. We collected a number of names and had lots of people saying they didn’t even know we had a rugby program here in Nanaimo. It was a successful day for us”.

Scott said his vision is for the game to be enjoyed by all.

“We have some people who turn up who have been playing for ten years, there’s others who have haven’t played since high school who want to get back into it. We can accomodate all skill levels. We want people to come and have some fun and find a path from there.”

Youth rugby for ages 4-12 gets going on Sept. 15 with the hornets hoping to build on a strong spring session with 70 participants.

“We revitalized the program to really engage everybody,” Scott explained. “The good thing about this is it’s a chance for the kids to try everything. We don’t just focus on games it’s a mixture of skills and fun.”

Scott encourages parents of youth players or any adults looking to start playing rugby to head www.nanaimohornetsrugby.com for more information.
