Big medal haul from provincial championships by Nanaimo track and field athletes

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Track and Field Club had a large medal haul at the BC Championships Jamboree.

Athletes from the U16 to senior level took home 18 medals from July 8-10 in Kamloops.

Nate Paris earned a gold medal in the Men’s U20 Decathlon and with 7145 points.

Fellow U20 competitor Sonya Urbanowicz won silver in both the women’s 100 and 200 metre races. She also captured a gold medal in the women’s pole vault with a jump of 3.70m.

In the U20 women’s 10,000 metre race walk Olivia Lundman finished first with a time of 47:24.73.

All three athletes met qualifying standards to attend the Cali, Colombia for the World U20 Track and Field Championships in Santiago de Cali, Colombia Aug. 1-6.

At the U18 level Haley Martin won two medals finishing third in the women’s 400 metre dash and second second in 400m hurdles.

Serenna Drake and Sacha Therrien each earned U18 bronze medals. Drake took third in shot put while Therrien made the podium in the men’s high jump.

Annika Lundman received a silver medal in the mixed U18 5,000 metre race walk.

A trio of U16 athletes had multiple medal performances.

Lucy Russel won the women’s long jump with a jump of 4.88 metres. She also placed third in the women’s pole vault.

Gavin Esleyer had a bronze medal finish in both the 200 and 300 metre races.

Ava Gauthier also earned two third place finishes in the women’s 2000 metre and the 1500m steeple chase.

Senior athletes Phillip Vannini and Makayla Mitchell both took home silver medals, Vannini in discus and Mitchell for javelin.

The next major event for for the Nanaimo Track and Field Club is the Junior Development Track and Field Championships in Surrey from July 15-17.
