Second Place Finish

Junior A Timbermen earn first round bye after very strong 2022 season

NANAIMO — The Junior A Timbermen are coming off their most successful regular season in franchise history.

In the first full campaign since 2019 Nanaimo finished 10-4 giving the club it’s best ever winning percentage and it’s first ever second place finish.

Coach Glenn Clark liked what he saw from the group in his inaugural season behind the bench.

“They saw what the expectations were and they played well. The tougher the competition the more they dialed in to discipline and systematic play and I hope that’s what we’re going to see in the playoffs.”

Jacob Dunbar, Nanaimo’s biggest off season acquisition, led the team in goals with 31 and points with 48.

The Timbermen didn’t have anyone in the top ten in league scoring but five players hit the 30 point mark in the 14 game season.

In goal Justin Geddie put up some impressive numbers finishing second in wins and save percentage and third in BC Junior A Lacrosse League goals against average.

Team president Chris Bowman said individual stats were not the focus but getting one of the top two spots in the standings was key.

“Getting a bye lets everyone heal and gives us a little time off to refocus and reset for our ultimate goal of winning BC and playing in the Minto Cup.”

Nanaimo will host the highest remaining seed from the first round in a best of five series starting likely on July 16 at Frank Crane Arena.

Langley and New Westminster are playing in one matchup and Coquitlam and Burnaby are playing in the other series.

STICK TAP

Former WLA Nanaimo Timbermen player and Senior A head coach Kaleb Toth has been inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in the player category.

He played seven seasons in Nanaimo and finished with overall Senior A totals of 162 games, 281 goals, and 365 assists.

As a coach he was honoured with the Nanaimo Sport Achievement Award for High Performance Coach of the Year in 2019.

Along with his WLA career, Toth played thirteen seasons in the NLL with the Toronto Rock and Calgary Roughnecks tallying 744 points in 194 games.
