Large amount of suspected drug money turned into Nanaimo RCMP

NANAIMO — Police are dealing with a tricky situation involving a large quantity of cash found on a north Nanaimo sidewalk.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said in the first week of a June a man spotted the money while out for his morning jog and turned it over to police.

O’Brien said it appeared the money had been recently lost and there is some doubt whether the cash was obtained through legitimate means.

“In this particular case nobody’s reported the money missing and it’s a significant amount, that leads us to believe that it was most likely tied to the drug market,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Police are trying to determine who’s cash it is and whether it was obtained legally.

Between $200 and $2,000 was found and the rightful owner will be required to provide specific details about exactly how much money and details of the bill denominations.

No envelope was found in the area and the Canadian currency appeared to be recently folded over, O’Brien said.

After 90 days, the man who turned the money in can re-claim it.

“The Good Samaritan isn’t interested in the money, he said if it was actually turned over to him he would donate it to a worthy cause.”

O’Brien said reports of missing cash are made sporadically to their department, with such incidents increasing in recent months with about four or five reports since late last year.
