Three Nanaimo United soccer teams vying for cup championships

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo United soccer program will send three different squads into cup finals in March.

The women’s premier side, the U21 men’s team and the division one men are all looking to bring home trophies for the club.

The first match is the women’s Terry Price Cup which was won by United the last time the event was held in 2019.

“The women’s program has been strong across the club the last several years,” said community engagement lead Jade Richardson. “Back to back cup appearances is a testament to the health of the women’s program itself. The Terry Price Cup is the biggest cup on the Island for women’s soccer.”

United finished third in the standings with a record of eight wins, one draw and four losses.

They’ll be going up against league champion Gorge FC from Victoria on Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m. at Starlight Stadium in Langford.

The U21 and division one men will play their cup games one week later.

It’s the first season for the U21’s and the team won the league by going 10-6-2.

Coach Daniel De Wet said he was proud of how the players came together in their inaugural campaign.

“Winning the league is a great reward for their efforts. We’re very pleased to be in the final of the George Smith Cup and we hope to bring the championship to United.”

The final will be held on March 26 at 10 a.m. also at Starlight Stadium.

Like the women the division one men’s side is also looking for a second title in a row, last claiming the Jackson Cup in 2019 after the event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021.

After a second finish with a record of 14-1-5 Nanaimo beat out top ranked Lakehill FC in the playoff quarterfinals.

The semifinal went nine players into penalties and again United emerged victorious to make the final.

Coach Kevin Lindo said the playoffs have shown the team’s togetherness and quality.

“Nanaimo has never won back to back Jackson Cups so with this game we have a chance to make history. The final will be a very tough game against a very tough team.’

Bays from Victoria will matchup against United in the final which will be the featured game on March 26 at 5:30 p.m.

The women’s final on the 20th will be live streamed on YouTube by Nanaimo United while the men’s matches on the 26th will be available via online stream from the VISL.
