School maintenance funds flow around B.C., mid Island districts land combined $4.6M

NANAIMO — Funding to improve the efficiencies and longevity of schools in the province includes a nearly $2.8 million injection for Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS).

The ministry of education announced on Tuesday March 15 HVAC upgrades at John Barsby Secondary School and Ladysmith Intermediate School are among projects to be completed during the upcoming fiscal year.

Three new school buses were also approved for District 68 as part of the funding.

The Qualicum School District received nearly $1.8 million for HVAC upgrades at Ballenas Secondary School, where energy enhancements as part of a carbon neutral program will also proceed.

Energy system upgrades are scheduled for Springwood Elementary School, while electrical work at Bowser Elementary School will also be covered by the provincial funding.

One new bus was also approved for District 69.

Overall the province announced more than $240 million dollars worth of school maintenance projects on Tuesday, March 15.

The province and federal government’s teamed up to provide $163 million in HVAC system upgrades to schools around B.C. since the start of the pandemic.
