Clippers lose ground to second place Rivermen with 6-5 overtime loss

NANAIMO — The Clippers led most of the game but a strong third period push helped the Langley Rivermen earn a 6-5 OT win at Frank Crane Arena.

The Clippers built up a 2-0 lead by the four minute mark of the second period on Cole Hansen’s first two goals of the season.

Nanaimo also led 3-1 midway through the game after Sean Donaldson notched his team leading 31st marker of the year.

Langley kept it close scoring late in the second period, but a Jake Hewitt goal restored the Clippers two goal advantage early in the final frame.

Three Rivermermen goals in a two and a half minute span in the third period changed the game.

With nine minutes left Langley led 5-4.

Tristan Fraser forced overtime and the Clippers had a late power play that spanned the end of regulation and the beginning of OT but they couldn’t solved goalie Jameson Kaine.

The shots were 35-30 for the Clippers with Cooper Black taking the loss in net.

Neither team scored on the man advantage with Nanaimo going 0/5 and Langley finishing 0/3 but adding a shorthanded goal.

The Clippers finished the season series with the Rivermen at 1-2-1 and remain in third place in the Coastal Division with six games remaining.

Nanaimo visits Victoria on March 12 at 7 p.m. and the team travels to Alberni Valley on Sunday at 6 p.m.
