Self-management message pushed with existing COVID restrictions under review

NANAIMO — While COVID-19 health restrictions in B.C. are remaining in place for now, a carrot continues to dangle indicating more easements are coming.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry opened a weekly COVID-19 media briefing on Tuesday, March 1 by stating decisions to remove additional health measures are expected shortly.

“I am very optimistic that we are moving to a better place rapidly and we’ll have more to say about that very soon.”

She pledged news on the status of restrictions will be made by spring break.

The most notable restrictions are a mask-wearing mandate in indoor public spaces and the BC Vaccine Card.

Other restrictions include safety plans for the K-12 school system, long-term care facilities and the faith community.

Last month the province established March 15 and April 12 as dates when remaining restrictions would be reviewed.

Dr. Henry emphasized the importance of the general public and business community relying on COVID safety measures they deem necessary, including the BC Vaccine Card, despite various restrictions being lifted.

She spoke at length about the transition to a self-management approach to the virus.

“We all need to continue to be respectful, we need to have a mask positive environment, we know that it makes a difference,” Dr. Henry said.

The number of people currently hospitalized with COVID related ailments in the province is less than half that the peak of the Omicron Wave.

However, 22 additional COVID related deaths were reported over the weekend as the number of people to die from virus related complications approaches 2,900.

Two weeks ago the province announced the elimination of most COVID health restrictions.
