Route & stops confirmed for Nanaimo-Cowichan bus link

NANAIMO — A daily transit link connecting the Harbour City with the Cowichan Valley is set to get rolling.

Regular bus service between the downtown Nanaimo exchange near Port Place shopping centre and Village Green Mall in Duncan will begin March 28.

Buses will stop at eight points along Hwy. 1, including South Parkway Plaza in Chase River, Nanaimo Airport and the intersection with 1st Ave. in Ladysmith.

Additional stops will be made at Drinkwater Rd., Beverly/Duncan St. near the Cowichan VIU campus, Duncan Train Station before finally terminating at the mall.

Return service to Nanaimo will stop at the same locations.

Fares on the route will be $7.50 for a one-way trip, while monthly pases will be available for regular passengers.

A five year service agreement is in place, featuring seven round trips on weekdays and six round trips on Saturday’s.

Costs to connect the two areas by transit are being shared equally between the Cowichan Valley and Nanaimo Regional Districts.

Establishing the route also opens up transit connections for mid-Islanders looking to travel to Victoria with existing public bus service already running over the Malahat.

Discussions are ongoing about linking RDN service in Oceanside with transit in the Comox Valley and Campbell River, effectively connecting every major centre on Vancouver Island’s east coast by bus.
