Second COVID-19 outbreak confirmed for NRGH

NANAIMO — Island Health has announced another outbreak of COVID-19 cases at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Seven patients on a fourth floor general medicine unit have tested positive, according to the health authority.

The situation on the fourth floor is unrelated to an ongoing outbreak on the floor above, confirmed by Island Health on Tuesday, Jan. 25. Five patients there have tested positive.

It’s the sixth outbreak at NRGH throughout the pandemic and the first time the hospital has had multiple outbreaks simultaneously.

Island Health said in a statement other areas of the hospital remain open and safe for use, including the emergency room. Anyone seeking treatment should not avoid NRGH as a result of these situations.

The health authority also confirmed another outbreak of cases at a Nanaimo care home, with Woodgrove Manor recording two positive tests.

It joins Dufferin Place, Nanaimo Seniors Village and Chartwell Malaspina with active cases among its residents in the city.

As with other outbreaks, both NRGH and Woodgrove Manor are limiting staff movements between affected units, increasing monitoring of patients and residents as well as pausing group activities including dining.
