New COVID-19 outbreaks declared at Nanaimo hospital, seniors village

NANAIMO — Island Health has announced two additional COVID-19 outbreaks on the mid-Island.

Five patients on the fifth floor, a general medicine unit, at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital have tested positive according to the health authority.

Island Health stressed in a late night release on Tuesday, Jan. 25 the hospital remains a safe place to visit with all other areas operating normally and all cases contained to the single unit.

It’s the fifth outbreak at NRGH throughout the pandemic with the most recent one occurring in November 2021.

In addition, two residents at the Nanaimo Seniors Village on Uplands Dr. are confirmed cases after testing.

Essential visits continue at both facilities while social visits have been suspended.

Staff movement is being limited while additional screening and monitoring of patients and residents is ongoing.

COVID-19 outbreaks remain ongoing at Dufferin Place and Chartwell Malaspina, along with Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville.
