NANAIMO — A woman was temporarily trapped, but wasn’t hurt after a tree tumbled over, taking three poles with it on the way down.

It happened Thursday, Jan 6 at about 10 a.m. on Vancouver Ave. at Cypress St. where Nanaimo Fire Rescue Asst. chief Stu Kenning said the incident played out as the woman was walking down the street.

“Once the crews investigated they found out the wires were Telus and Shaw wires, so not Hydro wires.”

While the tree made contact with the woman as she fell, Kenning said.

He credited her for staying still in the snow.

“She was in a dangerous situation and she did the right thing by listening to the fire service and everything worked out,” Kenning told NanaimoNewsNOW.

An ambulance crew arrived on scene, however the woman refused medical attention, Kenning said.

Neighbours reported hearing loud cracks and a crash as the tree and utility poles came down.

A stretch of Vancouver Ave. was closed for several hours as the scene was cleaned up.

Kenning said this incident serves as an important reminder to keep an eye out for unstable trees which could fall at any time due to inclement weather.

“It happens pretty regularly, very rarely does it happen where it injuries somebody,” Kenning said.
