NANAIMO — Two people were taken to hospital after an early morning crash on the Nanaimo Parkway.

RCMP reported a red Honda Civic travelling southbound on the Nanaimo Parkway, just past the Northfield Rd. turnoff lost control, crossed the grass median and collided with a black Nissan travelling north around 7:50 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 6.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said both female drivers were taken to hospital.

They were the lone occupants of their vehicles.

“The driver of the Honda Civic sustained serious life threatening injuries while the driver of the Nissan sustained significant injuries,” O’Brien said.

Police said weather conditions are a potential factor, however an investigation now underway will pinpoint the causes.

“We do have a lot of witnesses, but if there is anybody with dash cam, that’s excellent evidence,” O’Brien said.

Those with information can contact Nanaimo RCM’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.

Both vehicles involved were destroyed and will undergo mechanical inspections, O’Brien said.

The crash shut down Nanaimo Pakrway northbound traffic for around 45 minutes as crews cleared the scene, with traffic flowing again around 8:45 a.m.

Police re-routed traffic down Third St. or up Jingle Pot Rd. during the closure.
