VIDEO: Vehicle ploughs into house in overnight MVI, narrowly misses sleeping girl

NANAIMO — A family has escaped disaster after a vehicle crashed into their home.

RCMP and Nanaimo Fire Rescue were called to a home in the 2400 block of Highland Blvd., at the corner with Cosgrove Cres., shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW a vehicle travelling southbound on Hwy. 19A crossed the northbound lanes and went down the adjacent ditch, hitting a vehicle before continuing into the side of the house.

The car rammed through the home’s concrete foundation.

“The vehicle struck the house so hard, it was actually entirely lodged inside. The car came to rest just feet away from where a young girl was sleeping in her bed.”

The driver, an adult woman, was taken to hospital for minor injuries and observation and remains the focus of an impaired driving investigation.

Fortis BC and BC Hydro attended the scene to shut off services to the house after the smell of gas was detected.

The family were taken care of by emergency crews and spent the night in other accommodations.

O’Brien added it was “by the grace of God” everyone involved escaped serious injury or death.

“The house was structurally unsound to remove the vehicle, so it was left in there overnight. One would think speed will definitely be a factor on this given how far it travelled and the extent it went into the home.”

An investigation into the incident continues with police calling out for any dash cam footage or reports of the woman driving prior to the incident.

Crews were at the home early Monday, Nov. 29 surveying the damage and making preparations to remove the vehicle from the home.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue told NanaimoNewsNOW on scene they were waiting for an engineer to arrive before proceeding further.

Remnants from the vehicle were still scattered all over the property and on the approach across Highland Blvd.

The incident Sunday night occurred near another, similar incident in early October, where an impaired driver left the highway and crashed into multiple vehicles, narrowly missing a couple who had just gotten out of their car.
