PM Trudeau to make long-awaited Tk’emlups visit Monday
TK’EMLUPS — Tk’emlups te Secwepemc (TteS) says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will visit the community on Monday (Oct. 18). It comes three weeks after the prime minister rebuffed invitations to join Tk’emlups members for an event marking the first ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
In a news release, Tk’emlups says Trudeau will join in an event at the PowWow Arbour at noon on Monday. The event is not public, open for TteS members only. It will be live-streamed online.
The event will also feature remarks from Assembly of First Nations Chief RoseAnne Archibald, Shuswap Nation Tribal Council Kukpi7 Wayne Christian, as well as survivors and intergenerational survivors of residential schools.
Trudeau was roundly criticized for travelling to Tofino for a family vacation on Sept. 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, rather than attending ceremonies in Tk’emlups.
