South Island drives sizeable COVID-19 case increase throughout Island Health

NANAIMO — Island Health has sustained a significant jump in COVID-19 cases.

A total of 89 new cases were recorded for the health authority on Thursday, Sept. 16, one of the largest increases of the fourth wave.

The southern Vancouver Island area of the health authority accounted for 57 of the new cases Thursday, with 30 from the central Island and two in the north.

Active cases jumped by 50, to 581, including 258 on the central Island. Again, the south Island saw a large increase and is now home to the most number of active COVID-19 cases in Island Health with 262.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, 24 patients remain in Island hospitals for COVID symptoms including 13 receiving critical care.

Provincially, 706 new cases were confirmed by the province. Active cases now sit at 5,844 which represents a slight increase over Wednesday’s report.

B.C. hospitals have 291 COVID-19 patients admitted including 134 receiving critical care.

A further four people lost their lives to in the last 24 hours, bringing the province’s death toll from the pandemic to 1,877.

Over 86 per cent of people aged 12 and over have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccination, while 78.8 per cent are considered fully vaccinated.
