Saving lives by keeping your pets cool

NANAIMO — Record-breaking heat across B.C. is brutal for everyone, including pets.

The Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital confirmed four dogs passed away due to heat stroke over the weekend, where temperatures hit nearly 40 degrees.

Tinille McKenzie-Wyatt, a registered veterinary technologist at the emergency hospital, said they’re busy with admissions and the heat is playing a significant factor.

“This unprecedented heat is hard for everyone. We want to keep pets as cool as possible just like we’re all trying to do ourselves.”

She recommended keeping cool towels around to be draped on or under pets, as long as they’re changed frequently. There should be ample water dishes around a house or even a cool bath drawn for animals if it won’t stress them out.

“It’s hard but we’re all just trying to adjust to these extreme heats ourselves. People are used to their routine and maybe not thinking about how it’s affecting their pets.”

Any animal should be taken into the nearest clinic if they’re panting heavy and salivating.

“Once things get passed the 40 degree mark and they start cooking from the inside, they’re going to go into shock…when you go to touch them it’s a little sticky, their heart rate could be bounding and seizures. That’s very far gone and hard to come back from.”

McKenzie-Wyatt said it’s hoped no more animals will pass away due to the heat, which broke records again on Monday, June 28.
