Third period flurry leads Bulldogs to 7-2 win over Clippers

May 3, 2021 | 9:59 PM

PORT ALBERNI – The Clippers continue to start well but finish poorly in their Island Pod season.

Nanaimo lost 7-2 to Alberni Valley in a game where they scored first and were within a goal down 3-2 through 40 minutes.

Captain Trevor LeDonne scored his fifth goal of the season, and team leading 13th point, in the first period and Baxter Anderson recorded his first goal of the campaign in the loss.

Four goals in the first 6:52 of the third period, including two by the Bulldogs Adam Jeffrey, put the game out of reach.

Alberni’s power play was strong going 2/3 while Nanaimo was unable to capitalize with five chances.

The Clippers outshot the Bulldogs 46-36 but Luke Pearson got the win over the Nanaimo goaltending tandem of Jordan Naylor and Ethan Neitsch.

With four games left in the season the Clippers will not be able to reach first or second place in the standings.

Instead they’ll try to forge ahead of the fourth place Cowichan Valley Capitals.

Both clubs have 12 points but Nanaimo has one more win.

The Clippers will go back to back with the Capitals on May 7 and 8 but first they’ll play a 1 p.m. matinee versus the Grizzlies on May 5.
