PARKSVILLE — An elderly woman is dead following a two-vehicle crash on the Alberni Highway.

Emergency crews were called out just after 2 p.m. on Monday, April 26 to Hwy. 4A, near the overpass with Hwy. 19. Witnesses to the crash said a car driven by a 78-year-old woman had pulled off to the side of the road then turned out abruptly to execute a U-turn and head back towards Coombs.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman told NanaimoNewsNOW, emergency crews removed both the driver and a 93-year-old male passenger from the car and tended to two people inside the RV.

“Upon first glance of the people involved in the collision, everyone appeared to be shaken up but just fine. Unfortunately the female driver died in hospital, (Monday) late afternoon.”

The passenger in the car was also taken to hospital but was in stable condition. The two occupants of the RV only sustained minor injuries.

Foreman said traffic on Hwy. 4A was disrupted briefly due to the incident.

“Because it was not known to be a fatal collision at the time, it was cleaned up fairly quickly. I believe traffic was maybe disrupted for an hour and a half or two hours.”

Police are not considering charges as the offender did not survive, however investigators have ruled out speed, drugs and alcohol as contributing factors.
