NANAIMO — Another case of COVID-19 was found in a rehab unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Island Health confirmed the fifth case on Monday, April 19. The outbreak began on April 14 in the High Intensity Rehab Unit.

“Symptom onset for the additional case pre-dates declaration of the outbreak,” Island Health said in a statement. “This additional case is not the result of now or ongoing transmission in the unit.”

Island Health said 80 other COVID-19 tests among patients and staff in the unit have come back negative.

No new admissions are allowed inside the High Intensity Rehab Unit.

“No other areas of the hospital are currently affected,” Island Health said. “The hospital is still a safe place and people should not avoid seeking emergency care if they require it.”

This is the third outbreak at NRGH during the COVID-19 pandemic.
