NANAIMO — Officers have removed what they called a “significant” amount of drugs off Nanaimo streets.

A 54-year-old man, well-known to police, was arrested on March 3 after allegedly doing a drug deal in the Terminal Park Mall parking lot.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the RCMP’s Project Team found 40 litres of GHB, known as the date rape drug, in the trunk of the man’s car.

Roughly a half ounce of fentanyl, other drugs, $1,500 in cash and drug production equipment was then seized from the man’s home, motel room and storage lockers in the days following.

“A half ounce of fentanyl equates to about 1,400 individual dosages of fentanyl on the street. Potentially, this is saving 1,400 lives. That’s significant,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

“This person, easy to say, was selling drugs to marginalized people and the people who are absolutely entrenched in the cycle of drug addiction. To remove those drugs and get this person eventually off the streets is significant.”

O’Brien said possession for the purpose of trafficking and production of a controlled substance charges are expected as the investigation continues.
