Feb 9, 2021 | 4:20 PM

NANAIMO — Tuesday brought slightly smaller numbers of new COVID-19 cases within Island Health.

The health authority confirmed 22 new cases on Tuesday, Feb. 9. This is down from the 29 new a day during the previous weekend reporting period, which equalled Island Health’s worst weekend period so far during the pandemic.

There’s currently 235 active cases in Island Health, with roughly two-thirds found in the central Island area.

Island Health has hovered around 230 active cases since late January. The highest number of active cases was reached during early December, 2020 with 267 at the height of COVID-19’s second wave.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The number of active COVID-19 cases across all of B.C. rose by roughly 400 with 435 new cases announced by public health on Tuesday. This means very few people recovered from the day before.

There’s currently 241 people in hospital with 68 receiving intensive care.

Four more people passed away.
