Chartwell Malaspina outbreak declared over, 465 new COVID-19 cases in B.C.

NANAIMO — An outbreak first declared in late December is over at a Nanaimo care home.

In a joint statement from the province and public health on Thursday, Feb. 4, the Chartwell Malaspina care home outbreak was deemed officially over after no further cases were found.

The most recent reported case was Jan. 21 when a staff member tested positive. Since Dec. 27, seven residents and two staff members tested positive.

Two residents at the care home passed away during the outbreak.

Island Health confirmed social visits for residents will resume Feb. 4 and the facility will resume new admissions and patient transfers while residents will be allow to dine together with appropriate safety protocols in place.

Across B.C., the province confirmed 465 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

Island Health reported 28 new cases in the health authority taking the total number of cases to 1,739. Active cases increased slightly to 234 with 168 in the central Island region.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The number of active cases across the province remained relatively stable at 4,447, an increase of 21 since Wednesday. Hospitalizations continue to drop, down to 257 including 76 people in intensive care.

Six additional people lost their lives to COVID-19 on Thursday.

Despite limited supply, the province’s vaccination program has administered 145,567 doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, including over 8,000 second doses.

Earlier Thursday, the province updated the rules around the use of masks in B.C. middle and secondary schools. The changes require students to wear face coverings even inside classrooms when not at their desks.
