Shelter-in-place order issued for Snuneymuxw First Nation as COVID-19 spreads

NANAIMO — A shelter-in-place order is now in effect in Snuneymuxw First Nation after several COVID-19 cases were confirmed.

A letter from SFN chief Mike Wyse on Friday, Jan. 1 confirmed five positive cases.

The first was announced on Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Of the four new cases, two are within the same household.

“The affected individuals are in isolation and contact tracing is taking place or in some cases completed,” Chief Wyse said.

The shelter-in-place order began at 9 p.m. on Jan. 1. It’s effective for 14 days.

“During this time, access to all Snuneymuxw Reserves is being limited to one single access point at each reserve. Security checkpoints are currently being implemented.”

One person per household is asked to do the shopping for households.

Daily updates are now expected from SFN leadership during the duration of the outbreak.
