NANAIMO — Police say they were able to catch two accused porch pirates thanks to the high quality security footage which captured the crime.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the woman seen in a widely circulated video from a doorbell camera was arrested with a man on Milton St. on Sunday, Dec. 13.

They were arrested for several counts of theft under $5,000. Charges are pending against the man for a collapsible baton and a small amount of illicit drugs found during their arrest.

“This case was broken because of the quality of that video,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He said high quality doorbell cameras or some type of security system are highly recommended by RCMP since cameras can capture high quality and easily shareable images of perpetrators.

The Amazon packages stolen from porches across Nanaimo haven’t yet been recovered.

“We haven’t given up hope that we’ll find them but it doesn’t look good at this point.”

Both suspects were known to Nanaimo RCMP and also in upper Vancouver Island.

They were released with court dates in March 2021.
